Now in late autumn, when it dawns early, wildlife accidents are high season.

But why are the accidents increasing now?

How can you avoid them and what should you watch out for if you still collide with an animal?

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen

- "In spring and autumn the vegetation changes", explains Josef Heßlinger, press officer of the district hunting association.

“The animals then go where there is the best forage.” For example, the game crosses the road because the grass has already been mowed on one side but is still standing on the other.

“In my area, for example, on the Blomberg side, the grass ran out of minerals earlier.

On the other hand, on the sunny side, it has even more nutritional value.

That's why the animals run across the street. "

Take your foot off the gas

According to Heßlinger, the top priority is to adhere to the “Beware of game” warning signs and to reduce the speed accordingly. On stretches that are lined with meadows to the left and right, the shining eyes of the animals can be seen early in the dark, according to the hunter. Roads that lead through the forest are more confusing. Heßlinger therefore urgently advises you to take your foot off the accelerator there - even if there is no speed limit.

As a hunter, he himself also contributes to the prevention of accidents involving wildlife by attaching warning reflectors to the delineator posts.

“The reflectors shine at a 45-degree angle onto the field or into the forest.

Their blue color scares them off, ”explains Heßlinger.

In addition, there is a foam that is scented with predators and keeps game away, or small transmitters that emit an acoustic signal that makes the animals pause for a moment on the roadside.

As with any other accident: Secure the scene of the accident

If all else fails and a collision with the game is unavoidable, you should definitely not turn the steering wheel around to evade, but instead brake.

"If you have caused a wildlife accident, you should stop, turn on the hazard lights and set up a warning triangle," says police chief inspector Lars Werner from the Bad Tölz police station.

"When getting out it is important to put on a safety vest." Even if you think that nothing bad has happened, the police still have to be notified, adds Heßlinger.

Werner confirms this: "The police will issue a wildlife accident confirmation for the partial comprehensive insurance."

Always report a collision so that the animal does not suffer unnecessarily

“As a rule, the animals are hit very hard,” says Heßlinger.

"You should therefore always report an accident and not be indifferent." The police have a list with the addresses of the district owners, explain Heßlinger and Werner.

In this way, the responsible hunting tenant can be notified so that he can redeem the animal.

Under no circumstances should you go to the injured animal, for example to spread a blanket over it.

"If a person approaches the animal, it could startle and run into the forest, injured," says Heßlinger.

"That of course makes it more difficult for the hunter to find the game." If it runs away, it is important to note the direction in which the animal has fled so that the hunter can start the hunt for the dog.

"You cannot give a veterinarian to a wild animal"

"Shooting the animal to free it from its suffering is not a nice task for the hunter," says Heßlinger.

“But there is nothing else to do.

You cannot take care of a wild animal by a veterinarian. ”It is therefore important to the hunter that the people involved do not start a discussion as to whether it is really necessary to kill the animal, but rather walk away when it is necessary to shoot.

“You are excited in a situation like this, but you should still keep a calm head,” advises Heßlinger to motorists.

Accidents involving wildlife have increased significantly in recent years

As a driver, you shouldn't assume that the game only hits the road at dusk. "Wildlife can also be crossed at night," explains Heßlinger. “This is because there is so much going on in the forest during the day that the animals are forced to eat at night.” The number of accidents involving wildlife has increased significantly in recent years, according to the hunter. "But not only roe deer and deer are affected, but also badgers and hares."

Werner knows the wildlife accident figures for the district.

“Up to October 31 this year we had 438 accidents with wildlife.

The years 2019 and 2018 were similar with 475 and 470 accidents, if one assumes that there will be a few more this year. ”In 2020, on the other hand, only 366 wildlife accidents were registered in the district.

Werner: "It may be that this is due to the fact that there was less going on on the streets during the Corona lockdown."
