Half-hearted support for rental bikes

Will cyclists in the Miesbach district soon be able to borrow MVG bikes?

That is still uncertain.

Four northern municipalities want to install the “MVG-Rad” bike rental system - and had asked the district for a financial contribution.

But he's skeptical.

District -

Whether for the last few meters between the S-Bahn station and the front door, the way to work or for excursions: The rental bike service of the Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) wants to make mobility in Munich and the surrounding area more individual and sustainable. If you want to use one of the 4,000 rental bikes, you have to download the “MVG more” app onto your smartphone and register. Then he enters his location on the map, selects an available bike nearby and is sent a PIN code. He enters it into the bike's on-board computer - and off you go. It costs five cents a minute, but a maximum of twelve euros a day.

Holzkirchen, Otterfing, Valley and Weyarn find the system so convincing that they want to offer it too.

You have therefore applied for the district to take the lead in the introduction of the MVG bike - starting in the municipalities.

And that he participates in the financing (we reported).

The Munich district is the model.

There 80 percent of the investment costs are covered by state subsidies.

Ten percent should be shouldered by the respective municipality and ten percent by the district.

The municipality and district each share half of the annual operating costs.

No participation in the operating costs

District treasurer Gerhard de Biasio is particularly critical of the permanent participation in the operating costs. For him, participation in the investment costs is the only option - up to a maximum of 40,000 euros. "This is a voluntary participation, as the MVG rental bike system is not included in the local transport plan," he emphasized at the most recent meeting of the district development committee. Since the budget for voluntary services for 2022 is almost exhausted, only the sum of 40,000 euros remains. The committee members followed de Biasio's suggestion - and refused to have the district take the lead in the installation of MVG-Rad, including participation in the operating costs. On the other hand, they agreed to contribute 40,000 euros to the investment costs. "We want to support that in principle",said District Administrator Olaf von Löwis (CSU). It makes sense for the northern communities, as there are interfaces here with a view of the S-Bahn stations. However, it is questionable whether the system will also be successful in the southern district, where the gradients are more substantial. Electric bikes are not intended for the fleets in the Miesbach district for the time being.

No "free floating system"

Only Alois Fuchs (CSU) voted against.

"We are a rural population, the bike is then somewhere in the middle of nowhere." Peter Schiffmann, Head of the Mobility Department at the District Office, replied that that was not possible: "This is not a free-floating system." the designated station are handed in, the tenant logs out, otherwise he will continue to pay.

Not unlimited, however: if you park your bike somewhere in violation of the rules, you pay a fee of 20 euros.

Elisabeth Dasch (SPD), who is also a councilor in Holzkirchen, emphasized that Holzkirchen wanted to promote the MVG bike even without the help of the district.

“It is an important component for our traders and for our infrastructure.” Holzkirchen wants to build a station with 25 wheels at the train station, a station with 15 wheels in the north industrial area, one with ten wheels in the east industrial area and a parking stele with eight wheels at the town hall.

Further consultations are pending

It is unclear whether Valley, Weyarn and Otterfing will get the MVG bike without the district contributing to the operating costs.

"This has to be discussed and voted on again in the local councils," says Leonhard Wöhr (CSU), who is also Mayor of Weyarn.
