The search for ecological and sustainable building materials is one of the hottest areas today and the field of green construction is becoming increasingly popular in the face of the worsening climate crisis.

An interesting and relevant line comes from Germany, where researchers have succeeded in developing a method that turns popcorn into an environmentally friendly insulation material that could possibly be used in the field of construction in the future.

According to the scientists who developed the discovery, their natural material could in the future replace the use of synthetic and polluting materials, and serve as an insulating material that would help retain heat in buildings and cut down on their heating costs.

High-quality and efficient insulation can significantly reduce the need to heat buildings in winter with aids powered by gas, fuel or electricity, which in turn will reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere.

Today the insulation materials market is almost entirely dominated (90%) by artificial and polluting materials such as plastics and mineral fibers, and external insulation materials are sometimes produced using oil and its products.

According to researchers from the Faculty of Forest and Ecology at the University of Gottingen in Germany, the important parameters in creating an environmentally friendly insulating material are: renewable raw materials, well heat-insulating, fireproof and easy to recycle (when the building ends and is destroyed).

In their experiments, they were able to produce ecological and efficient insulation boards from apple corn kernels - AKA popcorn, using a process that transfers the popcorn granulation (deficit) and then compresses the material into the form of boards.

"The new process we have developed, which is based on processes used in the plastics industry, makes it possible to produce industrial-scale insulation boards in a way that is both economical and cost-effective," said Prof. Alireza Harazipur, who led the research team.

In the experiments they performed on the material it was found that it has excellent heat insulation capabilities and it also protects against fire in a good way (i.e. it is also effective in terms of safety).

The researchers believe that the most notable advantage of the insulation material they have developed is that it is based on a plant source, making it a green and sustainable alternative to petroleum or plastic-based products.

In addition, the researchers found that the natural insulation material they developed is also water-resistant, which may open up additional uses in the field of construction.
