The two rapes took place on September 12 in La Rochelle, just two hours apart.
The DNA results brought the two cases closer together.

The first victim, in her twenties, was raped in a park near the Oxford nightclub around 5 a.m.
The second victim, an 84-year-old woman, was assaulted around 7 a.m. while she was in the lobby of her senior citizens' residence after walking her dog.
The suspect already convicted in 2016 for rape
In a statement released on September 17, the prosecutor of the Republic of La Rochelle had given details of the assault of the octogenarian and the profile of the suspect. Violently pushed from behind and pinned to the ground, her attacker had imposed vaginal penetration on her. Shocked and hospitalized because of a suspected infarction following her assault, the victim was finally able to be interviewed and give details about her attacker. The departmental security investigations had made it possible to identify and arrest a 25-year-old man.
This 25-year-old man lived in cohabitation in a town near La Rochelle, was the father of a newborn baby and was professionally integrated. He had also intervened for the company employing him in the residence of the victim a few months before the facts. Originally from Reunion Island, he was sentenced there in January 2016 by the Court of Assizes for Minors to six years in prison for acts of rape, sexual assault and home invasion committed in 2013. Released in January 2019 afterwards the execution of his sentence, he was followed by the penitentiary service of integration and probation of Charente-Maritime but was reluctant to be supported by professionals or specialized structures.
During his custody for the rape of the octogenarian, he said he did not remember what he had done during the night of September 11 to 12, 2021, due to heavy alcohol consumption. and taking LSD.

He also assured that if he had done harm, he had not wanted to

, and did not know how to explain it anyway, according to this press release.
Indicted on September 17 by the investigating magistrate for rape of a vulnerable person in legal recidivism, he was remanded in custody by the judge of freedoms and detention.
