The Swedish parliament today elected the leader of the Social Democrats, Magdalena Andersson, as Prime Minister, to be the first woman to hold this position.
According to Agence France-Presse, Anderson, who served as finance minister in the government of outgoing Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, received 117 votes in favor, while 147 deputies opposed her candidacy, and 57 deputies abstained.
The Prime Minister of Sweden is elected as long as an absolute majority of 175 deputies do not vote against him.
Lofven resigned as leader of the Social Democrats and prime minister in early November after seven years in power.
