The red-red-green minority government in Sweden only holds a third of the parliamentary seats. Until recently, the social democrat Andersson had to fear for the necessary support. Now she has been elected.

The new party leader of the Social Democrats in Sweden will also head the government in the future.

In an election on Wednesday morning, Magdalena Andersson received enough votes to be the new head of the red-red-green minority government.

She is the first woman to hold the highest political office in the country.

The previous head of government Stefan Löfven submitted his resignation two weeks ago.

Andersson had previously taken over the chairmanship of the Social Democrats from him.

Then she received an exploratory mandate to form a government from the President of Parliament, Andreas Norlén.

Norlén finally proposed her on Monday as a candidate for the country's highest political office - despite the fact that at the time an agreement with the left was still being struggled with.
