Things are getting tight at the Germeringer fire brigade.

In two years, there should be enough space in the extension for the 85 active members and their vehicle fleet.

Construction work begins with the groundbreaking ceremony.

Germering -

Seven new additional vehicle aisles will be available to the Germering volunteer fire brigade when the extension on Augsburger Strasse is completed at the end of 2022.

Commandant Michael Kleiber's joy at the official groundbreaking ceremony does not detract from the fact that there will also be one or two rural district vehicles among them.

“Something is finally moving,” says Kleiber, looking at the construction site vehicles that have been at work for three weeks.

And it is high time: “Our vehicles are almost stacking up,” says Kleiber.

Because the old fire station, which has been standing for exactly 10,999 days, is cramped.

Kleiber calculated that exactly for the day of the groundbreaking.

Translated means: The building has reached its limits after 30 years.

If the 5.5 million euro measure is nearing completion in a year or more, more space will not only be created for the emergency vehicles, but also, for example, for the tools with which the vehicles are maintained.

The lockers will also be more contemporary in the future: private and work clothing can be separated.

Two apartments for emergency services

The city of Germering created the prerequisites for this with the purchase of the property.

And two more apartments are being built in the extension.

“It is the direction of the city to also create living space for the staff working there in such projects,” emphasized Germering's Mayor Andreas Haas.

The same applies, for example, to the construction of new childcare facilities.

In common with other construction projects in the city, the expansion of the fire station has finds that go back more than 10,999 days.

City archivist Marcus Guckenbiehl also found what he was looking for at this point: He discovered traces of pile dwellings and an old well - both of which can be attributed to the period around 400 BC.

Inauguration with a big party

Commandant Michael Kleiber knew how to appreciate this historical connection at the groundbreaking ceremony.

But in the end, the future remains.

For 20 or 30 years it will probably be quiet again.

There would then no longer be any expansion options on this site.

But with Kleiber, a good feeling remains: “We will have created good conditions and working conditions for our 85 active members.” It is to be celebrated with a grand opening in spring 2023 - “with warmer temperatures and better circumstances”, as OB Haas said in view of Corona and the drizzle at the groundbreaking ceremony.
