Opinion | Conquer justified anger - and return to UNESCO | Israel Today

2021-11-24T08:04:45.483Z

Israel left the organization because of the biased decisions and signs of solidarity with the United States, but the departure did not change anything in its conduct.

Four years ago, Israel slammed the door of UNESCO (the World Organization for Education, Culture and Science). It did so following the departure of the United States from the organization and as a sign of solidarity with it.

Both countries were abandoned due to anti-Israel political decisions, although the organization was originally established on behalf of the UN to address education and science issues purely professionally. The Arabs and their supporters succeeded in changing UNESCO's mission and turning it into another tool to blacken Israel's face.

But today the United States is seriously considering returning to the organization and stopping its boycott. Israel is currently debating whether to return to it, and rightly so. Four years of our absence did not change the organization's anti-Israel conduct. The fact that two countries left it did not reconsider Nor did he change the shameful decisions he made.

The continued boycott of UNESCO will probably not change the reality. The organization's elected president, Audrey Azoulay - the daughter of the Jewish adviser to the King of Morocco, Andrei Azoulay, who knows Israel very well - has failed to bring about the desired change. Because in front of them there were no countries that would prevent them from doing so.

It turns out that this situation does not serve Israel and the United States. Just as we do not abandon a military post against a bitter enemy, so we should not keep our feet away from such a hostile organization. It is better to fight from within and try to influence than to evacuate Israel An understanding of the entirety of our relationship with the Palestinian Authority before Israel returns to UNESCO is impractical.

The PA is looking for any way to harm us, so that it will not give up on an important organization that has also more than once adopted decisions that are difficult for Israel.

The problem is with the mechanisms of the UN organizations. If Israel leaves every time there are decisions against it, we will find ourselves outside the UN as a whole.

This situation is undesirable.

If the United States returns to UNESCO - and all indications are that this is the direction, Israel will not be able to remain outside it alone.

She will follow in the footsteps of the United States and rejoin it.

"On the contrary, many countries are unmoved by UNESCO's anti-Israel decisions. The decisions are not binding and have no impact on the ground. It is different for us because our threshold of sensitivity is higher, but the facts on the ground are what will determine. And will change so that decisions today are reversible tomorrow.

In light of all this, the benefit of being a member of UNESCO outweighs not being part of its ranks. When you are inside, you have a presence. You fight our blacks, recruit supporters and enlist the help of friends to make decisions against us.

And there are other possibilities: the Middle East is changing before our eyes.

Relations are being forged with Arab countries.

Israel is returning.

All of this will one day affect UN organizations, including UNESCO, because Arab countries are beginning to understand that Israel is the solution, not the problem.

We will, therefore, conquer our justified anger at UNESCO, consider only our own interest, and inform Washington that if it decides to return to the ranks of the organization, we too will return as a sign of solidarity /
