Benningen - For some time now there have been two steles on the cycle path from Memmingen to Benningen, just before the former Riedmühle and at the level of the former hammer mill.
From the working groups “Trade, Industry, Agriculture” and “Culture and History” of the Benningen village renewal, suggestions and measures came to set up memorial boards and information signs in the village or in the community area. The "Förderverein Benninger-Ried-Museum eV" and the Heimatkreis then took over an idea and the concept from the "Historisches Verein Memmingen eV". The “Memmingen - Places of Remembrance” steles are used at selected locations to not only remember buildings, events and people, but also to contribute to understanding the present.
As a connecting element between town and country, two steles have now been added in the Benningen municipal area. On one stele there is information about the Riedmühle, the hammer mill and the historical boundary stone from 1717. The other stele reports on the miracle of the Host and the building history of the Ried Chapel as well as the first elevated water tank in the city of Memmingen. The texts were written by Elfriede Bilgeri, Christoph Engelhard, Georg Frehner, Josef Hörberg, Franz Kustermann, Martin Mayer, Werner Schlauch and Manfred Sinner. When setting up the steles, care was taken to ensure that one also has eye contact with the object while reading the text. The initiators received great support in the implementation from the Friends of the Benninger-Ried-Museum and from Christoph Engelhard, head of the city archive and 1.Chairman of the "Historisches Verein Memmingen eV"
