St. James' Settlement received a grant of HK$15 million from the Swire Foundation to sponsor the development and operation of a community open space on the waterfront of Quarry Bay. The project was officially named "Quarryside" and is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

The "House District" will provide a one-story multi-purpose activity center and open lawns for community use, and some spaces will be open 24 hours a day.


The Swire Foundation's sponsorship lasts for three years and is mainly used to fund the operation of community open space.

The project will build a community-led vitality space on an unused land plot of approximately 3,740 square meters near Haidi Street, Quarry Bay, open to the public for recreation and use.

Swire Properties also supports the design and construction of the project and provides advice on its future operations.

The Community Open Space Project was supported by the Development Bureau's "Supporting Non-Government Organizations to Make Good Use of Vacant Government Land" funding program, and approved a grant of HK$60 million to cover the construction costs of the project.

To celebrate the smooth development of the project, representatives from the Development Bureau, St. James' Settlement, Swire Foundation and Swire Properties held a groundbreaking ceremony at the community open space project site today (24th).

The theme of the activities is to promote the development of arts and culture, sustainable development and creative ideas of the Hong Kong Island East community, and to promote the rich historical and cultural traditions of the district.

The multi-purpose activity rooms and venues in the "sharing area" will be open to local community groups and non-profit organizations to apply for use. There will also be pet-friendly facilities in the space to provide another resting space for animal lovers and fur children.

The activity plan will be held in diversified formats and themes, such as sports courses to promote physical and mental health; traditional handicraft workshops and exhibitions to encourage communication among community members; design thinking workshops and large-scale community activities such as themed fairs and environmental upgrading and recycling activities. Li Minbin, vice chairman of the Executive Committee of St. James' Settlement, said that this project will promote social interaction and improve community relations through community participation.

The Secretary for Development, Wong Wai-lun, said that the government has spared no effort in promoting waterfront development in recent years and has been working with the Waterfront Affairs Committee through the "first communication and then optimization" model to strive to release more waterfront land for public enjoyment as soon as possible.

The "Sher District" project is a successful example of the cooperation of non-governmental organizations, private enterprises and the government.

This time, thanks to the funding scheme of the Development Bureau, the St. James' Settlement and the Swire Group Charitable Trust Fund have adapted to local conditions and promoted the emergence of the "House District" project. , To bring more opportunities for the public to interact and rest on the waterfront, and to provide a venue for the community to hold cultural, artistic and festive activities.
