Mobile surfing, even when the data volume has been used up: this will soon be possible in the Moosburg center - and free of charge.

The city council has now decided that.

Moosburg

- The Moosburg City Council has been thinking about building blocks for a more attractive city center for years.

Now comes a measure that is intended to upgrade the digital infrastructure: At the request of Stefan John (Linke) and Philipp Fincke (FDP), the city council decided on Monday to set up comprehensive WiFi throughout the city center, free of charge for citizens.

Philipp Fincke had submitted the application in his role as digital speaker and won his colleague Stefan John as a supporter.

Hotspot rectification

The two city councilors justified their move by stating that the quality of stay in the city center could be increased through free internet.

In Corona times in particular, a widespread WiFi would ensure equalization, since there are currently crowds of people at the WiFi hotspot in front of the town hall.

Fincke also referred to a statement by Helmut Dedy, the chief executive of the German Association of Cities.

He had written that free WiFi hotspots in the cities make a significant contribution to areas such as tourism or business development.

This big step is worth the cost of around 20,000 euros and an annual maintenance of between 500 and 1,000 euros.

There is also the option of receiving grants for digitization.

In the case of a preliminary inquiry, Fincke already received a positive signal from the Upper Bavarian government.

It was therefore part of the application to include the measure in the Moosburger ISEK concept.

Various options were presented to the city councils.

In addition to the option of leaving it with the existing hotspot, there was also a compromise - in the form of an increase in the WLAN points.

These were determined jointly by the city administration and digital officer Fincke.

Ultimately, however, the two young city councilors got the maximum resolution with nationwide internet coverage in the entire city center.

In a second resolution, this time unanimous, the administration was commissioned to initiate the measure and at the same time to check the funding opportunities.

The 20,000 euros investment costs will be included in the 2022 budget.

No live broadcast

FDP man Philipp Fincke had also submitted an application to broadcast the public city council meetings live on the Internet.

There are a number of difficulties here with the implementation, and some city council members are not enthusiastic about them.

Fincke has therefore decided to withdraw the application, given the chances of success being close to zero.
