Two Dutch rioters were sentenced to prison on Wednesday, November 24, after violence against the tightening of health restrictions that rocked the Netherlands in recent days, announced the Rotterdam prosecutor's office.

The defendants, a 29-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, who each took part in the Friday riots in Rotterdam, were both sentenced to five months' imprisonment, two of which were suspended.

They were found guilty of throwing stones at the police during a demonstration which escalated and during which the police fired live ammunition, injuring five people.

Terence van den B. and Sharon M. were also given a one-year publication ban in the shopping area of downtown Rotterdam where the clashes took place.

Sharon M. will have to pay 1000 euros to compensate for the damage caused to the police cars.

You were there throwing stones at the police.

(...) When we looked at the images, I did not see a situation that requires you to defend yourself against anything, and you did not take advantage of it either

”, declared the judge, condemning Terence. van den B. "

This discussion is far from over, these troubles are far from over, as are your problems,

" he added.

173 arrests since Friday

The two defendants were from Spijkenisse and Delft, two neighboring municipalities of Rotterdam. The riots in this city on Friday brought together many people from elsewhere in the Netherlands, according to the authorities. After Rotterdam, clashes also took place in The Hague on Saturday, where rioters targeted the police with fireworks and stones. The cities of Zwolle, Groningen (north) and Roosendaal (south) then experienced lesser tensions on Sunday and Monday. A total of 173 people have been arrested and 12 injured across the country since Friday.

Health restrictions have been tightened since November 13 in the Netherlands, including forcing bars, restaurants and essential stores such as supermarkets to close at 8 p.m.

Public demonstrations are prohibited and football matches played behind closed doors.

The Dutch government plans to announce additional restrictions on Friday, in an attempt to stem a rebound in the epidemic.

On Wednesday, 23,789 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded in the Netherlands, a new record since the start of the pandemic.
