The leaders of three German parties announced today their readiness to agree to form a coalition government in which Olaf Scholz of the Social Democratic Party will replace Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Under the deal, Reuters reported, the new government will be the first three-party coalition government to take power in Germany since the 1950s, ending the control of Merkel's conservatives after 16 years in power.
A press conference will be held later on the matter after a recent round of talks between the centre-left Social Democrats, the Greens and the Free Democratic Party.
