The SPD, Greens and FDP are striving for an early coal phase-out to 2030.

Brandenburg's head of government sees the creation of jobs in the affected Lusatia in the foreground.

In the region, however, there is concern.

Potsdam - Brandenburg's Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) has pointed out the need to create industrial jobs as a prerequisite for phasing out coal by 2030. More jobs would have to be created than were lost due to the coal exit, he said on Wednesday in Potsdam in response to the coalition agreement between the SPD, the Greens and the FDP to bring about an early coal exit. So far it has been legally agreed that Germany will phase out coal-fired power generation by 2038 at the latest.

"The exit requires that other energy sources are available to ensure the supply," he emphasized.

“365 days a year, 24 hours a day, electricity from the socket must be secure.” It will depend on when the time will be.

It should not happen that coal is abandoned and electricity is drawn from Poland or nuclear electricity from France at the same time.

The coalition agreement presented in Berlin on Wednesday states: “In order to meet the climate protection goals, an accelerated phase-out of coal-fired power generation is necessary.

Ideally, this will be achieved by 2030. ”According to this, an early phase-out of coal should be achieved through a massive expansion of renewable energies and the construction of modern gas-fired power plants.

The share of renewable energies in electricity consumption is to increase to 80 percent by 2030; it is currently around 45 percent. The traffic light parties want to support the coal regions with a faster exit. Some measures should be brought forward.

Meanwhile, critical voices are coming from Lausitz, which is affected by the coal phase-out. The energy company Leag called for a “competent and responsible” review of the exit plans. The Leag expects compliance with the law and contracts from a new federal government, explained the chairman of the board, Helmar Rendez. "For us, this means that the question of whether and how far the coal phase-out can be brought forward in Germany must be compatible with the provisions of the Coal Power Generation Act (KVBG) and the associated contract between the federal government and energy companies." 2038 as a goal.

Rendanz also sees an earlier exit as a threat to security of supply.

"In these days in particular, we are experiencing an unabated high demand for electricity and heat that cannot be met by wind and sun and that is pushing even the remaining conventional generation systems to the limits of their capacity," he warned.

The expansion of the grid is still going too slowly, and Germany is still at the very beginning when it comes to energy storage.

At the same time, investments in new technologies would be delayed and made more difficult by lengthy planning and approval procedures.

"These are the tasks that a new government must tackle."

Phasing out coal-fired power generation in 2038 could be far too late.

However, plans to bring the date forward to 2030 were criticized by former NRW boss Laschet.

His successor, on the other hand, points to green.

Greens demand report on earlier coal phase-out

The North Rhine-Westphalian state government is to present its coal phase-out path to the state parliament in black and white.

On Friday, the opposition Greens requested a written report for the meeting of the Energy Committee on November 17th.

The spokeswoman for the Lausitz Round for Brandenburg, Christine Herntier, sees it similarly.

"The goal of phasing out coal in 2030 is unrealistic and a slap in the face of the people here, especially the mayor, who have been in many talks for an acceptance of the coal compromise with an exit by 2038 at the latest," said the former member of the coal commission dpa.

The grid expansion is stalling, the issue of energy storage has not been resolved, security of supply and the affordability of electricity have become a long way off.

The goal of creating new sustainable jobs in the affected region is difficult to achieve.
