At least 8 people died and 22 more were rescued this Thursday after a boat in which they were traveling sank off the coast of the Dominican Republic, the Dominican Navy reported in a statement posted on Facebook.
According to the statement, the rescue operation was carried out on the coasts between Miches and Celedonio, to the east of the island.
The Navy added that the group "tried to travel illegally to the neighboring island of Puerto Rico."
No details were given of how many people were on the boat at the time of the incident.
"Teams from the rescue unit, divers and Coast Guard personnel are actively searching the area to save lives and prevent further human losses," the statement added.
