Amsterdam - The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has given the go-ahead for the approval of the corona vaccine from the manufacturer Pfizer / Biontech * for children from the age of five in Europe.

The EMA announced on Thursday in Amsterdam.

It will be the first corona vaccine * to be approved in the EU for children under the age of twelve.

The EU Commission still has to grant Europe-wide approval, which is considered a formal requirement.

In Germany, in addition to the approval of the vaccine, a recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) is decisive.

The committee must now advise on the corona vaccination for children.

The vaccine called Comirnaty was approved on December 21, 2020 as the first of four vaccines to be approved across the EU, initially for people aged 16 and over.

At the end of May, admission was extended to children from twelve.

The Biontech / Pfizer vaccination is based on a novel mRNA active ingredient.

According to the EMA, the mRNA molecule leads to the formation of a protein in the body of the vaccinated, which the coronavirus also has and which it needs to penetrate the body's cells.

After vaccination, the body makes defense cells and activates white blood cells.

With them, the patient is then prepared against the virus.
