In Western Europe, Germany now has the fourth highest number of corona deaths.

Countries that are in a similar situation sometimes took a completely different path.

Berlin - Germany, which once received international recognition for its effective pandemic fight, has exceeded the threshold of 100,000 corona deaths.

In Western Europe, only Great Britain, Italy and France have more deaths related to the virus - albeit with a significantly smaller population.

In fifth place in Western Europe, if you look at the dashboard of John Hopkins University, the Netherlands would be the Netherlands with more than 19,000 Covid deaths so far.

Corona lockdown in Great Britain came very late in an EU comparison

According to figures compiled by the local health authorities, Great Britain has the highest number of corona deaths in Europe.

The country hit the 100,000 death mark at the end of January, and the number has risen to more than 140,000 since then.

Boris Johnson's government underestimated the virus in the early stages of the pandemic and became one of the last countries in Europe to lock down.

Johnson was the only European head of government to be treated with Covid-19 in the intensive care unit.

Britain later made a name for itself with a rapid vaccination campaign.

There have been no corona restrictions in the UK since July, and tens of thousands of people have been infected every day since then.

The national health service NHS is expecting a tough winter.

Corona in Italy: horror pictures from Bergamo hardly to be forgotten

In second place in the number of corona deaths is Italy, which at the beginning of 2020 was the first European country to be hit with full force by the pandemic.

At the beginning of March 2021, the Ministry of Health in Rome counted a total of more than 100,000 pandemic victims.

The dramatic images from Bergamo, where the army were hauling coffins on trucks to the overcrowded crematoria, will not be forgotten.

There have now been more than 132,000 deaths in Italy - although the corona restrictions were often much stricter than in Germany.

Italy's doctors and other medical staff have been obliged to vaccinate since May.

And since October, all employees have had to prove their 3G status at work with the so-called green passport.

There were violent protests against the restrictions.

The vaccination rate is high: more than 84 percent of residents over the age of twelve are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.

France had the most corona vaccination opponents at the beginning

Similar to Italy, resistance to the strict Corona rules was great in France.

The country hit the threshold of 100,000 deaths related to the virus in mid-April, and the number has since risen to just under 120,000 deaths.

France was initially considered one of the countries with the most vaccine opponents.

This has fundamentally changed.

In a highly acclaimed incendiary speech in July, President Emmanuel Macron announced a significant tightening of the measures.

The 3G rule has been in effect in public life since August, and vaccinations have been mandatory for health and nursing staff since September.

The efforts are showing success: In France, the proportion of the total population who are fully vaccinated is now 75 percent.

In Germany it is only 68 percent of the population over the age of twelve.
