There was a smell of damp concrete and cement dust, large stacks of paper and a few forgotten production equipment lay on the floor.

Here, in the still existing calender hall of the former MD paper factory, so-called calender rollers have flattened paper since 1885 ...

For the second time, around 40 visitors were able to take a walk through the neighborhood through the grounds on Ostenstrasse to take a closer look at the listed buildings. Immediately after the calender hall, we went upstairs to the former canteen built in 1951. The room was emptied, but much of it gave an inkling of lively breaks. Old lampshades dangled from the ceiling. The old MD company logo with the Münchner Kindl was still clearly visible on the wall. This motif was used for 40 years and was replaced by a more modern one in 1967. The glass windows, some of them broken, were made in the workshop of the Dachau glass painter Syrius Eberle. Motivating sayings from classic writers were incorporated into it, such as: "Have an effect on others through what you are". How this hall will be used in the future is still open.

In front of the entrance to the historic paper hall, guest companion Fritz Thoma, a former employee of the paper mill, spoke. In 1962, 100 years after the founding of the Munich-Dachauer Aktiengesellschaft für Maschinenpapierfabrikation, he started his first day there as a very young man as an apprentice for mechanical engineering. He emphasized that what is happening here is also a personal story for him. He also explained what is planned for the historic buildings in the future. The calender hall is to be used for retail and commercial purposes in the future. A youth culture center and a museum are planned in the paper hall.

The neighboring yellow steam engine house, which became the MD company museum as early as 1987, is to be integrated into the newly planned museum. In a niche of the steam engine house there used to be a marble brush made by Louis Weinmann, the first director of the MD factory. Because of his social commitment, Weinmann is known as the "father of workers". It was during his management time that the company received the first telephone connection in the whole of Dachau. On his 25th anniversary in 1889, Weinmann received the marble brush from his workers, which should definitely find its place in the museum again. The project development company Isaria had organized this tour for residents of the area to thank them for the inconvenience during the demolition work. This gave the participants the opportunity toExperience the transformation of the former MD paper mill into an urban quarter up close.

The deputy project manager Anika Schmider, who led the guests through the area, said that water had played a major role for the MD paper mill at the time. In this future Mühlbachviertel, it should become an element that can be experienced again. “The Mühlbach was previously led underground through the factory premises and used to generate electricity. But it will return to the surface in the future, ”said the deputy project manager. The Mühlbach is expected to be diverted to a provisional river bed in spring 2022. The complex measure is necessary to reduce the course of the stream and to rehabilitate the soil under the river. The Mühlbach should even receive a surfable wave. The project development company Isaria and Deutsche Wohnen recently announced thatthat the demolition work on the site has been completed.

A new chapter began on the site that had shaped the city of Dachau for over 140 years. 40 buildings with cellars and a volume of 704 561 cubic meters have so far been dismantled on the 14 hectare area, which consists of the central area, the Mayer Terraces to the north and the wood storage area to the south. The excavators moved over 600,000 tons of soil - which corresponds to a volume of 60,000 elephants. Around 1000 apartments for 3000 people are to be built on 90,000 square meters in the future, plus jobs for more than 1000 people on 60,000 square meters for commercial use. Isaria has now invested 25 million euros in its project. "The MD site is larger than the old town of Dachau and should be" organically "connected to the historic city center," emphasized Schmieder. The real estate company "Deutsche Wohnen" is to assume responsibility for the location in the future, according to the wishes of the City of Dachau.
