After a series of knife attacks in Frankfurt's train station district with one dead and three injured, the alleged perpetrator is said to be housed in a psychiatric facility.
The public prosecutor's office submitted a corresponding application to the Frankfurt Regional Court on Thursday at the start of the proceedings.
It assumes murder as a result of treachery.
Frankfurt / Main - The alleged perpetrator is considered schizophrenic and therefore incapable of guilt.
The 43-year-old Polish national apparently stabbed several people indiscriminately in the station district in January.
A 78-year-old passerby suffered such serious injuries that he died of it two weeks later in hospital.
According to the indictment, the man first attacked a homeless man who was helped by another passerby with irritant gas and thus drove the attacker away.
Shortly afterwards, he stabbed the 78-year-old in the stomach.
He seriously injured a third victim with a knife in front of a hotel.
According to the investigation, a fourth act did not have any fatal consequences because a paramedic was able to quickly help the seriously injured pedestrian.
The perpetrator was then arrested - still with the knife in hand - and the next day temporarily admitted to a psychiatric clinic for criminals.
The act triggered a large-scale operation by police and rescue workers in January.

The prosecutor said that because of his mental illness, the accused had come to the conclusion that he had to kill people in order to be remanded in custody.
On the first day of the hearing, only the prosecution's application was read out because the psychiatric expert was unable to attend.
The jury chamber has scheduled three follow-up dates and wants to conclude the process in December.
