During a telephone conversation with his Japanese counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced today his country's readiness for dialogue with Japan on the issue of the peace treaty between the two countries.
The Russia Today website quoted the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying in a statement, "During the call, which took place at the initiative of the Japanese side, Lavrov and Hayashi discussed issues of the subsequent development of bilateral relations related to advancing political dialogue, expanding trade and economic cooperation, strengthening confidence measures in the field of security and dealing between the two parties in the international arena." .
The statement pointed out that Lavrov affirmed, in response to a relevant request from the Japanese side, the readiness to continue dialogue on the issue of the peace treaty.
The issue of signing the peace treaty between Russia and Japan has been pending for 70 years, as Moscow requires Tokyo's recognition of the results of World War II, which means recognition of Russia's sovereignty over the four islands before any talk about it.
