He survived Corona - and Rolf W. is very grateful for that.

The man from Bavaria who refused a vaccination was in the intensive care unit with severe lung problems.

Wolfratshausen / Geretsried

- Rolf W. caught the highly contagious virus at the beginning of November and was in the intensive care unit of the Wolfratshauser Kreisklinik with severe lung problems for several days.

In the meantime, the 60-year-old is doing well according to the circumstances.

He wants to take the advice of senior doctor Anne Otto and now get vaccinated against Corona, as he explains in an interview with our newspaper.

Corona infection survived: Unvaccinated man from Bavaria survived

During our visit, the project engineer is lying with another patient in one of the separate areas in the Covid-19 intensive care unit that the district clinic has set up.

The door opens with a soft hiss at the push of a button.

Doctors and nurses are only allowed to enter the room with protective equipment.

The noise of a ventilator can be heard.

The machine takes care of Rolf W.'s bed neighbor, who is in an artificial coma and has to be serviced.

“This goblet passed me by,” says Geretsrieder, audibly relieved.

“I was afraid of intubating, because I just got the curve.” Statistically, around 40 to 50 percent of invasively ventilated Covid-19 patients die.

By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Wolfratshausen-Geretsried newsletter.

Unvaccinated Geretsrieder: Probably infected with coronavirus on the train ride

Geretsrieder has a suspicion where he got infected with the corona virus.

“I was with my father in Berlin at the beginning of November,” says Rolf W. He traveled to the capital by train.

On the way home, the train was "totally full".

The people all wore a mask.

But that's where it must have happened, he thinks.

A day or two later, "I started coughing a little".

A corona test confirmed the infection.

Within a few days, Rolf W.'s health deteriorated massively and he was admitted to the district clinic with severe lung failure.

He was ventilated with a mask.

"He used up to 90 percent oxygen," explains senior physician Anne Otto.

"We don't have more than 100 percent."

After what I've been through, I definitely want to get vaccinated.

I'm not an ignoramus, just a little bit stubborn.

Corona patient Rolf W.

A good ten days after being admitted to the hospital, Rolf W. is doing much better.

Several tubes are still attached to him, and he is still being supplied with oxygen through what is known as a nasal cannula.

Soon he can be transferred to a normal ward.

The 60-year-old is very happy about that.

“That makes me very happy,” he says.

He is very grateful to everyone who has looked after him.

"The gratitude is very deep in here," says Rolf W. as he puts a hand on his heart.

But it is also clear to him that he still has a long way to go before he is healthy again.

No corona denier or aluminum hat wearer: Initially, doubts about vaccination

Rolf W. explains why he has not yet had himself vaccinated: He is not a “corona denier or an aluminum hat wearer,” he assures.

But he was still in doubt about a vaccination against the virus.

The opinion of the supporters is very present in the media.

“But there are also other opinions from experts.

That was what I missed ”, Geretsrieder tries to explain his skepticism.

"I have thought a lot about what is right and I would have liked a wider discussion." Then events would have overwhelmed him.

"After what I've been through, I definitely want to get vaccinated," announced the Geretsrieder.

“I'm not an ignoramus, just a bit stubborn.” He advises everyone who has not yet been vaccinated: “It is your personal decision whether you want to be vaccinated or not.

But I can report from my experiences.

Take that into account when making your decision. "

By the way: his wife (59) probably infected Rolf W. with the virus.

However, she had only mild symptoms and healed in isolation at home.
