Opinion | The departure of UNESCO was justified - and there is no reason to return to it | Israel Today

Israel's return to the organization signals to everyone that it agrees to accept the role of the battered child, and just like him "invites" to inflict more beatings and humiliations on her • Response to Yitzhak Lebanon

In his column yesterday, Yitzhak Lebanon sought to persuade Israel to return to one of the most biased organizations against us, the World Organization for Education, Culture and Science - UNESCO. The range of considerations involved and not of emotional anger.

The balance of considerations even today clearly tends in favor of staying out of this framework.

Past experience shows that at UNESCO Israel can not influence from within, certainly not the delusional and despicable decisions that are made there wholesale and deny the Jewish people and the Jewish state any connection to the Land of Israel and its past. , Could not influence in this matter. Unlike the UN, where the veto right of permanent members of the Security Council can somewhat balance the automatic anti-Israel majority, at UNESCO the anti-Israel spirit is rampant, whether we are inside or outside.

But Israel's participation in this organization exacerbates the situation, because it forces us to share in its decisions and gives legitimacy to the shameful and hostile line it is taking. After all, if Israel is in its ranks, it will not be able to claim that the decisions it makes are invalid and void in principle, just because Israel voted against. Participation in any institution means recognition of it, and the right to make a voice heard. Participation in each vote means acknowledging its results, even if we do not like them. Does anyone in Israel really think that UNESCO has the right to determine that Jews have no connection to Jerusalem, and would we like to recognize the results of the vote that confirms this? Obviously not.

It should be borne in mind that UNESCO's decisions are more dangerous than those of other international organizations. The membership in it. UNESCO, on the other hand, is shrouded in the cloak of science and culture, and its decisions create a false representation of scientific determination in innocent readers, listeners and viewers. Israel must not give a hand in strengthening this false image. He is naked, and this, as stated, can not be done if we respect the organization in our presence.

"Israel's return to UNESCO is signaling to everyone that it agrees to accept the role of the battered child, and just like him" invites "more beatings and humiliations to be inflicted on her. And, he ordered that the membership fees saved be directed to the care of the Jewish heritage sites in Hebron.

There is no doubt that this is the right purpose of money - this is how it really serves the values of education, culture and science, and not the bureaucratic mechanism of an organization, which does not miss any opportunity to slander the Jewish state.

And there is another consideration: if we return to UNESCO only because the United States has finished saying to do so in the wake of the change of government in Washington, we will see on Shabbat Mishnah its direction as a spiritual commandment and not as a sovereign and serious state.

The countries of the world, both friendly and hostile, will respect us more if they discover that Israel is not a sponsor who changes its policy at a rate that others change socks.

"Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful," taught us a psalmist.

As far as Israel is concerned, UNESCO is the seat of the Supreme Court. Blessed is the state that it will not sit in it.

Were we wrong?
