The Ombudsman for Complaints against Judges, retired Supreme Court Justice Uri Shoham, today (Thursday) called for the second time in a year to examine the continuation of the tenure of the Chief Rabbi of Israel, Yitzhak Yosef, as a judge in the Great Rabbinical Court.

Shoham also ordered the Minister of Religious Affairs, Matan Kahana, to summon Rabbi Yosef to "reprimand him severely for his conduct."

The decision came after Rabbi Yosef and his bureau recently organized a conference of the Chief Rabbinical Council, which was also attended by city rabbis and dayanim, against the current government's kosher and conversion reform, contrary to the rules of ethics for city rabbis and dayanim who are not allowed to intervene in public or political disputes.

This is the second decision of the Commissioner against Rabbi Yosef.

In October last year, the commissioner called for an examination of the rabbi's continued tenure after the latter spoke out against the court system.

The current complaint, as well as the previous one, was filed by the Reform Center for Religion and State, after the conference at the end of which a statement was also issued with harsh criticism of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and its head, Minister Matan Kahana, and against the current government. For example, the statement said that the Rabbinical Council, the rabbis and the dayanim "reject outright the dangerous initiative of the Ministry of Religious Affairs to destroy kashrut and Judaism in Israel", which will lead to "destruction and destruction of kashrut", and "its ultimate goal is to abolish the Jewish identity of the state" Israel and the liquidation of the rabbinical institution in Israel "and it was also stated that" conversions carried out not by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel will not be recognized by the rabbis of Israel ".

Most of the dayanim claimed in response to the commissioner's request that they did not give their consent to the publication of the announcement on their behalf, and in addition that they received permission to attend the event by one of Israel's chief rabbis, David Lau, who serves as president of the Grand Rabbinical Court.

The retired judge ruled that "it is not possible to accept a situation in which the Chief Rabbinical Council initiates an emergency meeting, while it is clarified from the office of the Chief Rabbi and President of the Grand Rabbinical Court that the president approves the judges." "In which they express their opinion on a matter that is not essentially legal and is in public controversy."

"I was personally hurt by Rabbi Yosef."

However, Justice Shoham devoted a large part of his decision in the matter to Rabbi Yosef, who ignored references to him on the subject, even though the invitation to the conference came out of his office, and again called for a review of his continued tenure. "Our eyes see," the commissioner wrote. "Because not only did the dayan not internalize what was said in previous decisions of the commission, but it is clear that he continues on his way, even though he continues to serve as a dayan in the Great Rabbinical Court, and this time he even caused his members to fail."

Therefore, the Commissioner calls in his decision "to reconsider, whether the first Zion Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef deserves to serve as a judge in the Great Rabbinical Court, and at least, for his time in his office and reprimand him severely for his conduct."

The Minister of Religious Affairs, Matan Kahana, wrote on Twitter after the directive that "the freedom of speech and expression of rabbis and spiritual leaders, even if they hold a government office, is the core of the trust that a listening audience acquires to take to their value and spiritual leader." He added that "the day when the rabbis will shut their mouths will be the day when they will lose the trust of their fellow believers and listen to them." According to Minister Kahana, in recent months he has been "personally harmed several times by the statements of the Rishon Lezion Gaon Rabbi Yosef, however I gritted my teeth and remained silent - I will do the same this time as long as the law allows me."

The president of the Grand Court, Gd. This is the role of chief rabbi, expressing the position of Jewish law and hold 'fear no one. "He added that" Israel's chief rabbis along with rabbis of Israel will continue to guard the Jewish law and not be affected by these reviews or any other ".

Knesset members Moshe Arbel and Inon Azoulay Shas attacked the decision: "Uri Shoham's old age shames his youth," Arbel wrote. "Every sensible person understands the role of a rabbi in Israel since the giving of the Torah to carry the word of Gd proudly and to keep it. You will not live in front of anyone. Azoulay added that the decision was "scandalous,"Every Jew, as far as he is concerned, should be shocked and hurt by the violation of the honor of the Torah."
