Puchheim was the first municipality in the district to join the city initiative for inner-local Tempo 30.
The city council has now unanimously decided to join, but this has nothing to do with membership, but is only intended to signal support.
Puchheim - Based on Leipzig and Augsburg, among others, seven large German cities launched the movement.
The aim is to make 30 instead of the previous 50 kilometers per hour the maximum permitted speed within the built-up area.
So far, every exception to this rule has to be justified and approved.
For example, speed restrictions can be issued in front of kindergartens and old people's homes or at hazardous points or for reasons of noise protection.
Patchwork quilt
This can lead to a patchwork quilt like the one in Lagerstraße, which Mayor Norbert Seidl (SPD) cited as the “most obvious example”: On this thoroughfare you can find all maximum speeds between 20 and 50 km / h.
Traffic officer Christian Olschowsky (CSU) saw only advantages in such a new regulation, as long as thoroughfares and main roads are considered separately.
Manfred Sengl (Greens) recalled the arduous struggle for 30 km / h on Augsburger Strasse, although the residents of Puchheim-Ort had also asked for it.
Only due to recent rulings did the district office, as the higher-level road traffic authority, apply noise protection as a reason for a lower maximum speed.
The initiative for “liveable cities through appropriate speeds” has meanwhile also been welcomed by the German Association of Cities.
He also calls on the federal government to create the legal possibilities for the municipalities.
The streets could become safer and quieter, the air better, the traffic more fluid.
In advance, however, the practical effects - for bus traffic, for example - should be tested in a few model tests.
