In Germany too, women live in danger every day.

International Day of Violence against Women on November 25th aims to draw attention to this.

Regensburg - About every third day a woman is killed by her (ex) partner and dangerously injured more than once an hour.

The situation has worsened again in the corona pandemic.

But: So-called femicides are still often glossed over as “relationship drama” or something similar.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25th aims to raise awareness of the issue.

Human rights organizations have been involved around the world for 40 years, and the flags of Terre des Femmes and other institutions have been waving nationwide for 20 years.

The city of Regensburg will also show its colors and flags on Thursday.

Regensburg: Domestic violence increased in 2020

In Regensburg, too, the demand is more urgent every year: “Stop violence against women and girls!” Despite hashtags like #MeToo or the entry into force of the Istanbul Convention on a European level and the attention paid to the topic in society and politics - the numbers of women affected by violence and girls keep rising - worldwide, in Germany and also in Regensburg *, as the town hall writes in a press release.

The domestic violence figures recorded by the police headquarters rose again from 2019 (270) to 2020 (281).

This is also reflected in the advice and accommodation inquiries from women's shelters and the women's emergency number, which in some cases have increased even more than the numbers in the police statistics.

This includes in particular coercion, threat and bodily harm offenses, but also sexual offenses and homicides.

Regensburg: Actions on the day of violence against women

It remains very important to set strong signals against violence against women and girls, writes the city of Regensburg.

Lord Mayor Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer makes it “proud that a lot of different initiatives and activists have already carried out activities and events in Regensburg throughout November”.

Among other things, the student representatives at the university, together with various organizations such as the White Ring, the Autonomous Women's Refuge and the University Clinic, have developed a diverse program for a “month of action against patriarchal violence”. In addition to the raising of the Terre des Femmes flag on November 25, 2021 at 2 p.m., the Soroptimists will provide information at an information stand. In the evening at 6 p.m., a rally by the feminist collective will take place on Domplatz. The Regensburg Theater supports the day of action and irradiates the building on Bismarckplatz in Orange to draw attention to "the unbelievable extent of violence and homicides against women and girls".

In addition, the joint poster campaign "Violence affects us all!" By the equal opportunities offices of the district and the city of Regensburg will be continued.

The posters are currently displayed in a prominent place in the Alex Center.

It is the “task of everyone” not to leave victims of violence alone, emphasizes Mayor Maltz-Schwarzfischer, “in Regensburg and everywhere.” * Merkur.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA
