They are reminiscent of a serious accident in which a person was killed.

Road crosses are often an important aid for the bereaved to cope with the grief.

But rules apply to the small memorials.

Fürstenfeldbruck

- The B 2 leads across the district. Tens of thousands of cars and trucks are on the road every day on the 32 kilometers between Germering and Althegnenberg. And it crashes again and again. Often it remains with sheet metal damage. But sometimes life ends in a car wreck. The immediate traces of the accident are quickly removed by the fire brigade, towing service and street cleaning. But relatives often erect small crosses on the side of the road, set up candles, and place flowers. It is not uncommon for the accident to be years or even decades ago - and the memorial sites are still being looked after. That shows how important they are to the bereaved.

But as for so many things in Germany, the so-called Marterl rules also apply.

“In formal legal terms, road crosses are a“ special use at the roadside ”, reports the state building authority in Freising, which is responsible for the federal and state roads in the district.

That is why they have to be approved.

As a rule, this goes without any problems - for reasons of piety and out of consideration for the bereaved.

According to the building authority, there are around 15 such approved memorial sites in the district.

Traffic must not be hindered

The prerequisite, however, is that the memorial sites do not obstruct traffic, do not distract drivers, do not cover signs and do not impair the view. Or to put it another way: From the point of view of the state building authority, nothing speaks against a small wooden cross that stands behind a guard rail or at a safe distance from the street. Where exactly the Marterl can be set up will be found in a conversation between the bereaved and the road maintenance service. However, relatives should ask permission from the property owner if necessary. And another, very practical reason speaks against a location right next to the road: In winter, the crosses could be destroyed by the snow cleared from the road, in summer by mowing devices.

“In principle, massive memorial crosses made of metal or stone or with a solid foundation are not possible,” explains the authority.

Then there would be security reasons against it.

If a road is widened or a cycle path is built, the relatives will receive mail from the building authority - provided they have previously officially requested permission to erect the cross.

The relatives are then asked to temporarily dismantle or move the cross.

If it is not known who set up the cross, it will be stored in a road maintenance depot and returned on request.

Or the employees of the road maintenance department move the cross so that it is not damaged.
