Geneva, SANA- The International Committee of the Red Cross today announced the appointment of the Swiss diplomat, Mirjana Spolyaric Egg

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) today announced the appointment of Swiss diplomat Mirjana Spolyaric Egger as its president, the first woman to hold the organization's presidency.

"The Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Mirjana Spolyarik Egger will be president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, succeeding Peter Maurer when he steps down next September," the organization was quoted by AFP as saying in a statement.

She previously headed the United Nations and International Organizations Department in the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in addition to carrying out diplomatic missions in Bern, Cairo and New York, and worked with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
