The three films “Sissi” and the sequels “Sissi - The Young Empress” and “Sissi - Fateful Years of an Empress”, which were released in 1955, 1956 and 1957, are roughly based on the life story of Empress Elisabeth.
In 1854 the then 16-year-old became Empress of Austria through her marriage to her cousin Franz Joseph I.
The “Sissi” films are by no means documentaries, but a mixture of historical and homeland films.
The focus of the three parts is primarily on the love story with Sissi's "Franzl", the tensions with her mother-in-law Archduchess Sophie (played by Vilma Degischer) and the young empress's lung disease.
