Munich - “A little first winter

greeting is waiting for

us punctually on the first weekend in Advent”, says graduate meteorologist Dominik Jung from the weather service

.

Now winter is coming to Munich, but not only: all over Germany, including in lower elevations, the flakes can be expected.

“Completely typical weather for the end of November,” says Jung, classifying the situation.

Since it gets even colder on Sunday, the chances are even good that the white splendor will remain until the first week of Advent.

“From the west, however, a fun brake is approaching in the form of milder air,” knows expert Björn Goldhausen from w

.

Therefore it is still uncertain whether the early winter situation will continue afterwards.

A prognosis for the Christmas days cannot yet be made.

But it still remains a topic of conversation - linked to numerous myths about the white splendor and the weather in general.

What is it really about?

The experts clarify:

Myth 1: White Christmas was much more common in the past!

"This statement is wrong," says Goldhausen.

“A white festival has always been the exception in Germany.

As a rule, it was and is more green-gray for us. ”The reason for this is the Christmas thaw, which often ensures mild temperatures and rain on the holidays.

"From a purely statistical point of view, the chances of a white festival in most regions are only between ten and 30 percent."

Myth 2: The winters used to be much colder than they are today!

This thesis is half true and half not.

In general, in retrospect, people tend to remember particularly cold winters rather than mild weather.

“But it is true that there has been less snow and ice since the 1990s than before.

This trend is likely to continue due to climate change. ”And thus further reduce the chances of a white Christmas ...

Myth 3: Messages in the sky: afterglow - good weather forecast, dawn threatening with rain?

Yes, there is often something to it!

If the sky turns red in the evening, a weather front has often withdrawn straight to the east.

Then high pressure weather often follows.

Exactly the other way around in the morning: red sky in the morning usually announces the gathering clouds.

White Christmas?

That was 16 years ago

If you look up when Munich last experienced a white Christmas, you have to go back a long way in the calendar.

In 2005 there was a blanket of snow on Christmas Eve, but it measured just four centimeters.

It was even less two years earlier, when the state capital brought it to three centimeters.

One could speak of real white splendor in 2001, when there was ten centimeters of snow.

"According to statistics, there is a white Christmas every ten years," says meteorologist Dominik Jung, referring to the nationwide figures.

So after a 16-year break in Munich, it would be time again for flakes to fall on Christmas Eve.

Incidentally, the last time there was really a lot of snow was decades ago: in 1968 it was 18 centimeters at Christmas, in 1962 it was even 28 centimeters.
