"The calls for covid in Germany have not reached everyone," Acting Health Minister Jens Spahn told reporters at a news conference on health in Berlin.

Spahn urged that "if decisive action is not taken now, there will be drastic action in the coming weeks."

The Health Minister said Germany must do more to tackle record levels of infections.

Last week, outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that the country was limiting public access to the unvaccinated.

"We need a massive reduction in contacts between people immediately," reiterated the director of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Lothar Wieler at the same press conference. "The number of patients in the ICU is increasing rapidly." Wieler said that In some covid-19 hotspot areas, patient transfers to other areas have started due to overloaded ICUs.
