EU countries want to suspend flights from southern Africa

The members of the European Union are planning a joint response to the new variant of the coronavirus.

A total of seven African countries are affected.

Brussels - The EU states want to suspend all passenger flights from seven countries in southern Africa in view of a new, possibly more dangerous variant of the corona virus.

This affects Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe, as the German Press Agency in Brussels learned from diplomatic circles after a special meeting of the EU countries on Friday.

The agreement is not binding on the EU countries, but it is reported that all countries supported it.

Many states, including Germany, have already imposed restrictions.

Germany will declare South Africa a virus variant area, the acting Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) announced on Friday morning.

The regulation will come into effect on Saturday night.

If necessary, neighboring countries in South Africa are also affected.

Airlines would then only be allowed to carry German citizens to Germany.
