It cannot be taken for granted that old people in Germering can get a warm meal every day, 365 days a year.

It cannot be taken for granted that old people in Germering can get a warm meal every day, 365 days a year.

Germering - This is made possible by the social service with its “Meals on Wheels” department. The offer has a long tradition in social services: the first customers were supplied with frozen food as early as 1970 - and for 20 years now, with warm food. “Eating warm once a day, that's quality of life,” says department head Karin Korten. “But shopping and preparation becomes tedious with increasing age.” 16 volunteer drivers from the social service ensure that the elderly do not have to go without their usual food. In three to four tours, each of the drivers brings the warm lunch home to around 180 customers in Germering.

If requested, they only come on certain days.

The service can also be booked daily - including weekends, public holidays, even Christmas Eve or New Year's.

“Every year we bring around 35,000 meals to Germeringer clients.

We deliver to around a third of them every day, ”explains Korten.

At a small celebration on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the offer, Social Services Board Member Sabine Brügel-Fritzen thanked the volunteers and, above all, Karin Korten.

She has headed the department for almost ten years and has known some of her customers for many years.

"I am grateful that we have such a committed team that supplies customers regardless of the wind and weather and is also available for work on weekends and public holidays," said Brügel-Fritzen.

“Another strength of the offer is our flexibility.

The entire social services administration team helps with the logistics required for this. "

Customers can basically choose whether they want their food from a local restaurant - the Kastanienhof restaurant works here with social services - or from the contract partner Hoffmann Menu.

For them - but often also for their relatives - the food delivery means a great deal of support in everyday life.

“Most of our clients are around 80 years old, but we also have 70 and 100 year olds,” says Korten.

Anyone interested in the offer can contact the social service.
