Meßstetten insists on the agreement with the country.

In it the municipality was assured not to use the former Zollernalb barracks again as refugee accommodation.

Meßstetten / Stuttgart - The differences of opinion between Meßstetten and the Ministry of Migration regarding the accommodation of refugees in the municipality persist: On Friday, the city in the Zollernalb district asked the Ministry to set up a state initial reception center (LEA) at another suitable location.

"We assume that the state government will refrain from reactivating the LEA in Meßstetten," said Mayor Frank Schroft (CDU).

Due to the increasing number of refugees, the country is urgently looking for additional places and is examining whether the former LEA in Meßstetten can be put back into operation.

Schroft assumes, however, that a contract from 2016 still applies, in which the state committed to Meßstetten not to use the site and the premises of the former Zollernalb barracks as an LEA after December 31, 2017 .

“I warn the country against breaking the treaty.

The city has other plans, the state should accept this, ”said the district administrator of the Zollernalb district, Günther-Martin Pauli.

The area is completely unsuitable for refugee accommodation.

The neighboring military training area was being blown up and shot.

The city of Meßstetten and the special purpose association of the Intermunicipal Industrial and Commercial Park Zollernalb (IIGP), founded in 2020, want to set up an industrial and commercial park on the Geißbühl site.

Another meeting with local representatives and the state took place in Stuttgart on Tuesday. Schroft said that the content of the conversation had been agreed to be confidential. “And I keep to agreements.” The city council also refused to reactivate the LEA. The mayors of the cities of Albstadt and Balingen had also spoken out against reviving the LEA.

According to the Ministry of Migration, it is certain that places for around 900 people can be created by the end of the year. 200 refugees come to the LEA Sigmaringen, 200 to the reception center in Heidelberg, 150 places are created in Schwetzingen - in each case by optimizing the occupancy within the existing stock. 70 places are created in the LEA Ellwangen, 50 in the initial reception facility in Giengen, 100 in the initial reception facility in Stuttgart and 130 places in the LEA Freiburg and the associated facilities. "If the number of arrivals remains like this, we will need around 800 more places in the coming months," says a spokesman for the Ministry of Migration in Stuttgart.

According to the Ministry of Migration, around 2000 refugees were accommodated in the state initial reception centers (LEA) in October.

So far, 2400 have been registered in November.

There are around 6300 places for refugees in the country's four LEAs, around 4500 of which are occupied.

And it should stay that way, because you want to avoid corona infections.

Hence the search for more space.

There are four state initial reception centers in Baden-Württemberg: in Ellwangen, Karlsruhe, Freiburg and Sigmaringen.

The LEA in Meßstetten was closed in October 2017.

Around 28,000 people have been accommodated there since October 2014.

If the development continues this year, up to 20,000 refugees could come to Baden-Württemberg, the Ministry of Migration calculates.
