In 2016, Chen Wanchen, who represented the Civic Party in the election for the "Super District Council" of the Legislative Council, was a crowdfunder. It took two weeks to raise 800,000 yuan and eventually received a donation of up to 1.6 million yuan.
He recalled that in the past, crowdfunding "a lot of people supported it" and believed that "if there is no response for a period of time, it should be all after a while." He believes that the final amount raised will not be ideal.
Chen Wanchen: The key to crowdfunding is the mass foundation
Chen Wanchen’s election funds that year were advanced from his wife’s provident fund of over 2 million yuan, and two days before the vote, because he fell behind other democratic candidates in the polls, he announced that he would abstain from the election in order to concentrate the votes on his comrades-in-arms.
In the end, due to the fact that the voting rate was not enough to meet the statutory requirements, even the election deposit could not be retrieved.
Afterwards, the Civic Party initiated online crowdfunding for him, and eventually raised 1.6 million yuan.
Chen Wanchen recalled that the crowdfunding had received many responses within a short period of time when it was launched. "It was completely spontaneous. Qu Wei (supporter) did his best. The neighbours kept talking about support. I was very moved." He said that the beginning was very important. The key is that there is a basis for neighbourhood support. He didn’t have much publicity. “It was all initiated by other people.” He pointed out that the amount of expenses required for the election was not small. The donations from the Civic Party accounted for about 10%.
He declined to comment on whether it will be more difficult for the non-establishment faction to be independently elected this year to raise funds.
