The French declare their love
About 7 million households (out of a total of 30 million) use wood for heating. A figure which should increase further, the government's objective being to achieve the use of firewood in 10 million homes by 2023. It is true that this fuel is proving to be economical. With more than 90% of domestic firewood coming from French forests, it does not depend on geopolitical elements which partly explain the fluctuations in oil prices. If we think in heat equivalent per kWh, the cost of energy is around 5 cents with wood, against 10 for fuel oil and gas, before the price increase, and 18 for electricity.
Heating represents an important item of expenditure in a household (nearly 9% according to the Ministry of Ecological Transition).
And for 2021, the household budget should be particularly impacted by the sharp price increases: + 59% for gas and + 55% for fuel oil since January.
