Fewer people come to Frankfurt than usual, but they are disciplined.

This did not apply to everyone in Marburg, which is why the city readjusted.

Frankfurt / Marburg - Once again, the first weekend in Advent is marked by the corona pandemic. This also means wearing a mask at the Christmas markets and keeping your distance - and it leads to less crowding than usual. A spokeswoman for Frankfurt Touristik said she was satisfied with the course of the Christmas market so far, which is characterized by the ongoing pandemic. "The number of visitors is far below those of a normal year, but we're glad that the people are really very disciplined," said Ines Philipp. Only individual people are out and about without a mouth and nose mask and are advised of the applicable corona measures by the police and employees of the public order office.

“The people who come here want a Christmas market - and they know that it can't be like 2019,” said Philipp. With structural measures, the organizers have already ensured that “everything stays in motion and bottlenecks are avoided.” Extra-wide aisles, a reduction from a good 200 to 170 stalls, a mask requirement and 2G at the mulled wine stands and an additional area at the Roßmarkt should make a visit to the Make the Christmas market safe.

Under Corona conditions, the number of visitors is probably around 50 percent lower, Philipp estimated.

Bus tourists stayed away, as did visitors from abroad.

“The bus parking spaces are empty.” On weekdays, the trend towards working in the home office depresses the number of visitors - a spontaneous Christmas market stroll with colleagues is usually not possible in the second Corona year.

In good years, between 2.5 and three million visitors would be expected at the Frankfurt Christmas market, says Philipp.

"This year that is clearly below - and that is a good thing," she emphasized in view of the high number of infections.

For years, new climbing halls kept opening up.

Then the operators had to close for months due to two lockdowns.

Now many climbers want to go high again.

In Marburg, however, the Christmas markets now close earlier after violating Corona requirements.

They are only open at the two locations until 6 p.m., the sale of alcohol ends at 5 p.m., the city announced on Saturday.

At the start of the markets on Friday, the hygiene concept initially worked well and the requirements were also met.

In the evening, however, keeping your distance and wearing masks decreased significantly.

"As the number of visitors increased, the organizers could no longer adhere to the hygiene concept of the organizers at individual points in the narrow space," the city said.

The market was closed at 8 p.m.

The regulatory authority, the district and the city then decided to close earlier and sell alcohol for a shorter period of time.

"Because the problem is not buying roasted almonds, Christmas decorations or a sausage for the children, but situations in which - especially under the influence of alcohol - hygiene rules are no longer observed," the message said.

Masks are compulsory at the stands at the Marburg markets.

The mask may be put down in "consumption areas" as long as a distance of one and a half meters can be maintained.
