Puchheim - In late autumn, children and volunteers from the LBV met in Fußbergmoos for an energetic campaign: The Heck cattle herd needed new feed troughs, because the old ones were now clearly showing their age.

For a whole morning, eight children from the regional NAJU children's groups and six volunteers from the LBV district group Fürstenfeldbruck hammered and screwed new hay racks made of untreated wood. The LBV was able to provide the required material thanks to a donation. At the same time, the children learned through play the importance of the foot mountain moss and the tasks of the Heck cattle as four-legged biotope keepers. The campaign took place as part of the generation project “NAJU meets LBV”, which brings together volunteers and children of the LBV's nature conservation youth.

For almost two decades, the robust cattle with the mighty horns have been helping LBV Fürstenfeldbruck to look after the fens.

Through the year-round grazing, they keep the areas free of bushes so that these rare animal and plant species do not displace.

In winter, LBV volunteers feed the six Heck cattle with hay from a regional organic farmer, because in the cold season there is too little food in the moor for the large animals.

Thanks to the help of young and old, they can now enjoy their additional feed from new troughs.

Discover nature in a playful way

For the children, the building was at the same time an exciting and eventful insight into the nature conservation work of the LBV.

The volunteers in the cattle service introduced them to the "Heckis" by name and showed them how to distinguish the animals based on their various characteristics.

With the help of nature adventure games, they went on a discovery tour around the topics of "Heck cattle" and the Fußbergmoos as a habitat and retreat for endangered plants and animals.

The children were also able to test the functionality of the drinkers and the playability of the cow gate.

Generational exchange in action

The environmental trainers of the LBV Fürstenfeldbruck launched the project “NAJU meets LBV” this year so that different generations can exchange experiences on species protection.

The aim is to arouse the children's enthusiasm for nature and at the same time pass on the knowledge of the experienced active people to them.

In the course of the project, they have already built insect nesting aids together and worked together on various biotope maintenance activities.

Further campaigns will follow in 2022.
