There could hardly be a stronger signal: the district committee and the Miesbach city council unanimously passed their resolutions on the student research center within 48 hours, thereby emphasizing the importance of this project.

It is an important starting signal for concrete implementation to start now.

Miesbach

- Setting up a project as large as the student research center that has been discussed for years requires one thing above all: good planning. So it was now a matter of creating the basic requirements for further steps with two fundamental resolutions of the two most important pillars - the district and the district town of Miesbach. This has now been achieved, and with impressive unity.

In the district committee, District Administrator Olaf von Löwis (CSU) explained the possibilities that a student research center can offer the district and the economy. As a low-threshold offer, it should help to get children and young people excited about the so-called Mint areas - the word Mint stands for the first letters of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. And through playful interaction in order to create interest and understanding for the theoretical background and at the same time not to let fear of contact arise in the first place. The highlight: The center should be accessible to all schools in all cities and municipalities in the district - under the technical management of the Technical University of Munich. In the long term, this is intended to counteract the shortage of skilled workers in mint jobs. Löwis:"So a future-oriented, sustainable measure."

clear commitment to the student research center in Miesbach is a big step for the educational region

The student research center with laboratories, workshops and specialist rooms is to be housed in Miesbach, on 180 square meters on the second floor of the old hospital, which belongs to the city.

Mayor Gerhard Braunmiller (CSU), who together with Löwis and the constituency representative Ilse Aigner (CSU) had been very committed to the project in advance, confirmed the importance of the center as a committee member: “I think it is a lighthouse project for the district .

We are now as far as never before. ”The location is right next to the grammar school and secondary school and is only six minutes away from the train station.

"A prime location."

First steps together

The district is ready to take over the sponsorship of the Mint network as well as the costs for the material expenses and the Mint manager for a further four years.

As reported, the district had already applied as a Mint region in 2017, but was only awarded the second attempt in 2019.

Since then, a Mint manager has been in action, which initially resulted in the expansion of the Fab-Lab project of the location marketing company, where the manager's position is located.

According to treasurer Gerhard de Biasio, the Fab-Lab, which is now based in Gmund and from there drives to the schools for project hours with its mobile, is to be integrated into the student research center: “Then you could also work at the different schools so that not all of them follow Miesbach have to. "

Big potential

The project was well received by the members of the district committee.

"Innovation is the engine of our society", stated Thomas Tomaschek (Greens), and Birgit Eibl (SPD) broke a lance for Miesbach: "This is in the middle of the district and is the right location."

"Knowledge is our raw material"

There was also unrestricted support in the district town.

"This is a good addition to our campus," said Second Mayor Astrid Güldner (Greens), and Markus Seemüller (FWG) affirmed: "That is very, very positive, because knowledge is our raw material." Erhard Pohl, whose CSU The faction also fully supported the project, recalling that the city must invest in the building: "As landlords, we have to make the rooms rentable."

There were two concerns.

Güldner campaigned for a common room to be found for the nursing students housed in the old hospital, and Paul Fertl (SPD) reminded them that a new place had to be found for the material and furniture store for asylum seekers and socially disadvantaged citizens.

Braunmiller integrated both into the decision as test orders.

It is still unclear whether a foundation or a support association should be set up for the student research center.

"We still have to weigh that up," says district treasurer de Biasio.

One problem has largely been resolved: The money for the initial funding comes from a generous donation.

Hexal co-founder Thomas Strüngmann is supporting the 2022 project with 500,000 euros.
