Faced with the new methods used by fuel thieves, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has 15 pairs of dogs to detect clandestine intakes, of which four operate in Hidalgo, one of the states with the highest incidence of this modality of hydrocarbon theft in the country.
To date, only Mexico, Colombia and Iraq have this specialty, according to members of the Mexican Army and the parastatal company.

One of them is Bono, a German shepherd who was donated to Pemex's Strategic Safeguarding area and who in just eight months of being in service has detected more than 60 clandestine intakes.
“The canine elements of Petróleos Mexicanos are of great help to be able to find outlets that are difficult to locate, since thanks to their great sense of smell they help us to identify the hoses that are often buried a few centimeters or meters underground.
With his nose we can detect it more efficiently without wearing down the staff ”, explains his trainer.
"We have the canine element named Bono, which has approximately 60 clandestine shots so far in 2021, I repeat, shots that are difficult to locate," he stresses.
Bono and his partner Drako, who has detected 260 intakes, are supporting the work carried out by the Mexican Army as part of the joint plan of attention to strategic facilities of Pemex.

“The Mexican Army has the support of canophile binomials who are in charge of Pemex, these binomials are specialized in the search for clandestine seizures.
There are shots that when the ground surveys are carried out are not visible because it may be a tunnel, the shot may be very deep, so these canophile pairs are trained so that by means of the smell they detect where the fuel leak is ”, detail members of the 18th Military Zone, of the state of Hidalgo.
For Pemex, the cannabis binomials represent an indispensable tool in the fight against the theft of hydrocarbons, one of the criminal activities with the greatest impact in Mexico.
