Among six communities in France and while La Roche-sur-Yon has received the trophy of "Capital of Biodiversity 2021", the municipality of Val

Twenty kilometers from Reims, the mayor of Val-de-Vesle, a village of 922 inhabitants, is not at his first attempt.

Already last year, Serge Hiet received the “Territory committed to nature” label from the French Biodiversity Office (OFB).

“The distinction then focused on a future action plan.

This time, the competition, on the theme of water, took into account the operations carried out or in progress.

And that's an understatement to say that they abound.

"Just last week, 70 inhabitants received a nesting box or a passage for hedgehogs," explains the mayor, listing the files: carrying out a local mapping with the League for the protection of birds (LPO), planting rustic orchards and hedges, pond digging, nature outings ...

“The villagers also voted for the nightly extinction of streetlights in Val-de-Vesle.

This is proof of their interest in biodiversity, ”adds the city councilor, who made it, in 2014,“ the priority.

We must reconnect the inhabitants to their environment otherwise, we are going straight into the wall.

All ecosystems start from water and we are here on marshy ground, with rivers and wetlands to preserve.

"

"A swamp is not just a mosquito reserve"

As part of the “Capital of biodiversity” competition, concrete actions were therefore detailed before the on-site visit of the scientific committee this summer.

“The first concerns land.

Our municipality, as soon as it can buy sensitive land, does so.

So in 2010, 25 ha of marshes were pre-empted and then rehabilitated.

“A swamp is not just a mosquito reserve.

It's an incredible carbon trap.

»1000 poplars, once intended to dry up the area, were thus felled (then marketed).

Another original action: the establishment of an educational land area.

“It's something new that caught the jury's attention.

The town makes natural plots available to the school.

From year to year, the CM1s will follow one another to define a project to be carried out.

"

It is therefore to schoolchildren that the trophy will be officially awarded on December 6, even though the municipality keeps its feet on the ground.

“We are currently working on a subdivision project.

The developer will have to take into account our environmental objectives by integrating a green park, even if it means selling at a lower price.

We remain in our logic and it is not easy to find the right project.

“Efforts still need to be made.
