An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 shakes the north of Peru

An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 shook northern Peru this morning, shortly before 6:00 am (local time), the Geological Survey (USGS, in English) reported this Sunday.

The Peruvian authorities reported that, so far, they

have only registered two injured and 75 affected people.

According to the report of the National Institute of Civil Defense, the Amazonian district of Valera has been the most affected with 30 people affected.

Despite being a large earthquake, it was relatively deep: about 70 miles (112.5 km).

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the Peruvian Amazon, 26 miles (42 km) north-northeast of the city of Barranca.

The Geophysical Institute of Peru assured, for its part, that the earthquake occurred 81 miles (131 km) deep and 61 miles (98 km) east of Santa María de Nieva, in the department of Amazonas.

The

earthquake was felt in Ecuador, Venezuela and Colombia,

according to the newspaper La República.

The Geophysical Institute of Ecuador confirmed that the event was felt in its territory.

This fact was also reported by users in cities such as Loja, Pichincha, Ambato and Lluzhapa, where an ancient structure collapsed.

The Ecuadorian authorities specified that in the Saraguro canton, a house was destroyed and a family was injured, while in Loja a church tower collapsed and there was damage to the masonry of some houses.
