"

I feel pain (...) for those who died in the Channel, for those who are on the border with Belarus, including many children, for those who are drowning in the Mediterranean

", declared the Pope during of his Sunday angelus in public at the Place Saint-Pierre.

"

Let us think about how many migrants are exposed these days to very serious dangers and how many lose their lives along our borders,

" he urged.

"

I renew my appeal to those who can contribute to the resolution of these problems, in particular to the civil and military authorities, so that understanding and dialogue ultimately prevail over any type of instrumentalisation

".

The shipwreck which cost the lives of at least 27 people is the worst migratory drama in the Channel, now crisscrossed daily aboard fragile boats by migrants trying to reach the English coast.

The pope's declarations come on the very day of the holding of discussions between Germany, the Netherlands, France and Belgium on the migration issue, organized in Calais (northern France).

London was excluded from this meeting after a diplomatic quarrel with Paris.

The Pope also recalled the tragedy of migrants who try to cross the Mediterranean to come to Europe.

Those who are repatriated to North Africa are captured by traffickers.

They turn them into slaves, they sell women, they torture men,

”he denounced.

"

To the migrants who find themselves in these crisis situations, I assure my prayers as well as my heart, know that I am by your side

", he affirmed.
