The persecution of the proud community in Russia has found a new victim, the Netflix streaming service.
An investigation was opened yesterday (Saturday) against the company after the trust body for preserving "family values" filed a complaint with the Russian Interior Ministry against the company, claiming it was violating a law banning "spreading proud propaganda."
The reason for the claim is that the company allows viewing of content of a homosexual nature for minors and it is even classified as recommended for viewing over the age of 16. The law in Russia prohibits exposing minors to content that mentions the LGBT community.
Netflix itself declined to comment on the case.
Sources in the country told Reuters that Netflix could face a relatively small fine of up to a million rubles, $ 13,000, or in a more serious case be suspended from broadcasting temporarily.
Sources close to the company told local media that the company did a test and even sexual content distributed by Netflix in its Russian service is not indicated under the label of viewing from the age of 16.
The complaint against Netflix comes less than a week after the Russian Interior Ministry demanded that the social networking giants Facebook and Twitter set up offices in Russia and comply with Russian law, or that their services to the Russian population be blocked by the state.
It is part of the Kremlin's growing effort to gain control of the network and prevent it from serving as opposition elements to the government.
