Once in a very long time a movie like "The Power of the Dog" arrives, a beautiful western with amazing acting performances by Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst, and a very unexpected twist

"The Power of the Dog," by great director Jane Campion ("The Piano"), is a slow, enchanting and beautiful atmospheric western that will drop you to the floor and leave you speechless.

It's also my movie of the year, right now.

The story takes place in Montana in 1925, and Benedict Cumberbatch stars as an elephant - a dusty, powerful and revered cowboy who lives on a huge farm in the middle of nowhere with his beloved and introverted brother George (Jesse Flemons).

The two have a herd of cows, a thriving business and a simple life, and Phil seems to like it that way.

But then the shy George falls in love with Rose (Kirsten Dunst), the owner of the lonely and sad restaurant from the nearby town, and soon the two get married. To Phil's chagrin, Rose moves into the brothers' home, and shortly afterwards her student son Peter (Cody Smith-McPhee), who is studying medicine, arrives, further upsetting the balance. You don't have to be a great genius to guess that it will not end well.

Based on a forgotten novel by Thomas Swag, published in the 1960s, Campion presents viewers with a serene, oppressive and unsettling psychological thriller, in which all the main characters fight over territory and control. At first Rose tries to please the jealous elephant, but she has no chance. He deceives, teases, abuses, terrifies her and seeks to break her spirit in every way possible. At the same time, Peter also suffers a bit of ridicule and contempt from the downfall and the rest of the farm workers, due to his feminine appearance and blatantly unmanly demeanor. George, for his part, turns out to be a total impotent, unable to put his brother in place, leaving Rose with little choice. If she wants the situation to change, she will have to do something about it. but what?

I've seen quite a few movies in my life, and I own one that knows how to predict plot twists long before they occur.

But what Campion cooked here came as a complete surprise to me, and I really do not remember when was the last time such a thing happened to me (on second viewing of the film I was also amazed to find out how visible the clues to what is going on are, and how much I missed them).

Happily, the road leading to the stunning and exemplary end is also lined with varied pleasures.

Campion navigates the work with great skill, while making sure to convey to viewers a shaky and unforgettable cinematic experience.

The views are spectacular and breathtaking;

The music (by Johnny Greenwood) is mesmerizing and completes the tense atmosphere;

And Dunst and Smith-McPhee's sensitive and accurate acting displays deserve the full attention of award-winning people.

Meanwhile, Cumberbatch's pulsating performance certainly justifies a paragraph of its own.

Although I really like him as Sherlock and as Doctor Strange, I have to admit that so far the dramatic roles of this esteemed actor have not really left a deep imprint on me.

Anyway, here he is just in a completely different league.

Just like his character, he too gets lost under the sweat and layers of dirt and grime, which cover his body like armor.

On the one hand, it is a repulsive and ruthless monster.

On the other hand, as the film progresses, the elephant becomes more and more complex and tragic.

In short, a fascinating character.

Shell film.

Want to see it in theaters, wait for it to air on Netflix on December 1st, the main thing you will see.

Score: 10
