Saxony-Anhalt's Greens have repositioned themselves in terms of personnel.

These days, however, the gaze is also directed towards Berlin.

The designated Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke campaigned for approval of the coalition agreement of the traffic light parties.

Magdeburg - The Greens in Saxony-Anhalt will in future be led by a young management duo.

Madeleine Linke from Magdeburg and Dennis Helmich from Halle were elected as the new state chairmen at a digital party conference on Saturday.

The 29-year-old left had no opponent and received 87.1 percent of the vote.

The 30-year-old Helmich received 63 out of 100 votes and prevailed against John Liebau from the Wittenberg district association, who received 37 votes.

The election results must be confirmed in writing by the delegates after the party congress.

In Saxony-Anhalt there are sometimes large gaps in the internet and mobile network.

In her application speech, Linke demanded that the Greens should become more visible in rural areas. With “bouncy castles and barbecues” one wants to reach people in order to discuss topics like right-wing extremism, so Linke. Its goal is to increase the number of members from the current 1,300 to 1,800 in the next two years. Candidates should be prepared at an early stage for the European and local elections in 2024.

Helmich also wants to help increase the number of mandates in city councils and district assemblies.

"We are the party that makes politics for town and country," he said.

Different solutions are needed for this.

A climate-friendly transport policy could succeed in the city with a higher frequency of public transport, in the countryside, on the other hand, projects such as “shared driving” would have to be promoted.

The core issue of climate protection must also be combined with economic and social skills, demanded Helmich.

The designated Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke also took part in the party congress and asked the members to approve the coalition agreement between the traffic light parties.

"We have presented a good contract, all three parties can be found in it," said the member of the Bundestag with a view to the agreements of the SPD, FDP and the Greens.

It is about a new approach in environmental policy, said Lemke.

The ecosystems would have to become more resilient to the climate crisis.

“We have to initiate a discourse on how we can manage our natural resources better in the future.” Lemke also praised the fact that it was possible to anchor the conversion of animal husbandry in the coalition agreement.

The black-red-yellow state government in Saxony-Anhalt called on the Green politician not to fall into a "blockade" attitude in the event of an early coal exit.

Lemke said that structural change must be shaped together with Berlin.

"The structural change is necessary, we don't do it out of joke and frenzy." Dpa
