According to the Hesse Ministry of Social Affairs, the suspected case of the newly discovered Omikron coronavirus variant in Hesse is a person from the Rhine-Main area. The Hessischer Rundfunk had previously reported on it. On Saturday (November 27th, 2021) the authorities announced that virologist Sandra Ciesek had identified several typical features of the virus variant in the case of the returnee from South Africa.
According to the ministry, the person had already arrived at Frankfurt Airport last Sunday (21.112021) from South Africa.
At that time, South Africa was not classified as a high-risk or virus variant area.
She was reportedly fully vaccinated, then developed symptoms and had tests over the week.
According to the ministry, the results of the full sequencing are expected on Monday (11/29/2021).

Frankfurt Airport: Person suspected of being Omikron was fully vaccinated

via Frankfurt Airport suspected of being infected with the new Omikron variant of the coronavirus was fully vaccinated.
The Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs announced on Saturday in Wiesbaden that she came into the country from South Africa via Frankfurt Airport on November 21.
Over the course of the week, the person developed symptoms and then had them tested.
She was then isolated at home.
The result of the complete sequencing can be expected in the next few days.
At the time of arrival, South Africa was not classified as a high-risk or virus variant area.

Corona variant: Omikron is "with a very high probability already in Germany"

Wiesbaden - The Corona * variant Omikron (B.1.1.529) is "with a very high probability already in Germany".
The Hessian Minister of Social Affairs Kai Klose announced this on Saturday morning (November 27, 2021, 9.42 a.m.) via Twitter.
“Last night, several mutations typical of Omicron were found in a person returning from South Africa.
So there is a high level of suspicion that the person has been isolated at home.
The complete sequencing is still pending ”, writes Klose.
As his ministry confirmed when asked, the returnee had landed at Frankfurt Airport.
Klose combines this information on Twitter with an appeal: “Please protect yourself and those around you.
If you have returned from southern Africa in the last week, limit your contacts and get tested! "

Corona variant Omikron "worrying": Federal government reacts
The discovery of the Coronavirus variant Omikron was announced on Thursday (November 25th, 2021) in South Africa *.
The World Health Organization (WHO) classified B.1.1.529 on Friday (November 26th, 2021) as "worrying".
According to South African scientists, the variant could be even more contagious than the currently rampant Delta * variant because of the unusually high number of mutations and make the corona vaccines * less effective.
Many countries responded with restrictions on air travel.
Because of the variant, the federal government declares South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, Eswatini, Malawi and Lesotho to be virus variant areas from Sunday, midnight, as the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced on Friday evening.
