According to the Hesse Ministry of Social Affairs, the suspected case of the newly discovered Omikron coronavirus variant in Hesse is a person from the Rhine-Main area. The Hessischer Rundfunk had previously reported on it. On Saturday (November 27th, 2021) the authorities announced that virologist Sandra Ciesek had identified several typical features of the virus variant in the case of the returnee from South Africa.

According to the ministry, the person had already arrived at Frankfurt Airport last Sunday (21.112021) from South Africa.

At that time, South Africa was not classified as a high-risk or virus variant area.

She was reportedly fully vaccinated, then developed symptoms and had tests over the week.

According to the ministry, the results of the full sequencing are expected on Monday (11/29/2021).

Corona variant Omikron "worrying": Federal government reacts

The discovery of the Coronavirus variant Omikron was announced on Thursday (November 25th, 2021) in South Africa *.

The World Health Organization (WHO) classified B.1.1.529 on Friday (November 26th, 2021) as "worrying".
