On Hanukkah we are known to celebrate the miracle of the jug of oil from the period of the Hasmonean Revolt, but it is clear to all of us that if that jug of oil had also been used to prepare some of the dishes most identified with this holiday, it probably would not have lasted more than a few hours.

It is a holiday of donuts, pancakes, and lots of other forbidden pleasures that are an integral part of the childhood (and adulthood) memories of us all.

This is why it is so important these days to put in extra effort to balance the nutrition of the children as much as possible.

Here's how to do it in eight simple steps:

1. Do not give up the sandwiches

We tend to make sandwiches for children especially when they go to school, but also during the holidays, this is an easy and quick way to ensure our children an available and nutritious meal that we control everything in it.

Even on vacation, try to make your children invested sandwiches.

Use wholemeal bread and rolls and give preference to protein-rich ingredients that will also prolong the feeling of satiety.

For example, you can use Starkist tuna, which is rich in protein, white cheeses (up to 5 percent fat) or yellow (up to 15 percent fat), and of course eggs.

You should also add vegetables that will enrich the sandwich with vitamins and minerals and also color it in shades that make the eye happy.

A perfect meal.

2. Make fun and inviting snacks with the children

alongside the pancakes and donuts, why not make other and more creative snacks with the children as well? For example, you can make fruit-based popsicles with them - which will also be colorful and delicious, and will also provide them with a variety of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and dietary fiber. Popsicles can be a cool and refreshing balance for the warm and fatty foods of the holiday.

Fill the house with a fragrance that everyone loves

Corn is one of those foods that really has it all in it - it is both delicious and sweet, both easy to prepare and rich in a long line of nutrients. Corn contains a number of essential vitamins and minerals, including folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, B vitamins, vitamin A and E. In addition it contains minerals like potassium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, iron and copper as well as a fair amount of protein and dietary fiber.

And alongside the contribution of corn to health, you can imagine how its intoxicating aroma will envelop the house in sweet warmth and contribute to enhancing the holiday atmosphere.

You can also indulge in pastries that are not deep fried in oil.

4. Make sure you have healthy snacks at home

alongside the sweet pastries that we are sure are already filling your kitchen, you should also balance the fridge with healthy snacks like dates, chopped apples and other fruits that are fun to eat at all times. The more your refrigerator contains these healthy snacks, the more likely your child is to choose a healthy option when they feel like something sweet.

5. Bake healthier things too

It may be easy to forget this ahead of Hanukkah, but not every pastry has to be deep fried in oil to enjoy it. Why not bring home a wholemeal pretzel, which can be a great snack,? Such a pretzel can be a great base for a meal and goes well with toppings of healthy protein such as white cheese or tuna salad and of course vegetables.

6. Do not forget the vegetables

Even if your children do not "fly" on vegetables, it does not mean that you should stop trying - certainly during the holiday.

It is always advisable to make sure that you have frozen vegetables in the freezer, so that when the children swing again and ask "what to eat", you can offer them to warm them up and there is a chance that you will be surprised.

The vegetables, it is important to understand, retain their nutritional values even after freezing and are therefore a useful and tasty choice even for those who work late and can not cook for children during the holidays.

A convenient solution for days of trips and attractions.

7. Do not be afraid of cans

Cans do not exactly connect in our minds to a healthy diet, but you may be surprised to find that most cans, such as tuna Starkist, do not contain preservatives at all. Preservation is done by heat sterilization and most of the nutritional values of the contents - are well preserved. This is also true for corn, chickpeas and peas.

So whether the children are left at home alone or whether you travel together to distant places - it is recommended to also stock up on such boxes and not just rely on snacks and sweets.

8. Offer, do not preach

After all we have said here, it is important to remember: as we mentioned at the beginning, Hanukkah is basically a holiday of sweet and fatty foods.

It's part of his charm and what makes it so enjoyable.

On this holiday in particular and in life in general, it is important not to fight with the children so that they eat healthy, but to allow them to enjoy, to share these sweet moments with them - but also to be there to advise, balance and protect, so that they do not cross the border.

Remember that the relationship with the children and these memories with them are more important than any other vitamin or mineral that you can get into their body.
