A newly founded climate committee in Eching has big plans.

50 interested parties have taken the first step towards a municipal climate protection concept.

Eching

- "Climate protection is a task for society as a whole, which affects us all and to which we can all make a contribution," said the invitation to a public workshop in Eching.

The objective of this kick-off event under the direction of Eching's climate protection manager Lena Herrmann: the establishment of an Echoing climate advisory board.

And this was launched just as successfully as a total of six working groups that want to deal with the broad field of environmental and thus climate protection “on site” - the first step towards a communal climate protection concept.

The working groups

As the respective spokesperson for their working group, chaired by Herrmann Ines Stadler, economic development agency of the municipality (working group on sustainable companies and regional economies), Phillip Buschmann (AG Renewable Energies, Waste and Resources), Daniel Ettenhuber (AG Mobility), Vhs director Doris Fähr (AG Environmental Education), Nicolaus Walter (AG Agriculture and Food) and Susanne Wehkamp (AG Construction Planning and Climate Impact Adaptation) the climate advisory board. 2. Mayor Stefanie Malenke took over the greeting and thematic introduction to the founding event conceived by Herrmann. She called on people to be courageous when making unfamiliar or uncomfortable decisions for climate protection - according to the motto "Action is necessary, change is possible."

Motivating and informative at the same time, Melanie Falkenstein, Climate Protection Manager for the City of Moosburg since 2016, and, as moderator, Moritz Strey, Energy Officer in the Freising District Office, provided start-up and obstetrical assistance for the Climate Council. Falkenstein was able to report on a large number of successful climate protection activities in Moosburg, starting with the often requested funding programs in the energy and mobility sector to age-appropriate projects for environmental education in schools and daycare centers.

In Eching, too, Herrmann would like to bring schools and day-care centers “on board” and will promote networking there.

The task of the climate council is to advise the community on global climate goals at the local level and to propose measures tailored to Eching.

The aim is to build on what has already been initiated in Eching, such as e-charging stations, photovoltaic systems, retrofitting street lighting to LED, joining the working group of bicycle-friendly municipalities or expanding the existing district heating network.

The current state

Lena Herrmann, who took up her position in May as the municipality's first full-time climate protection officer, first presented the current situation to the visitors, on which one can build on Echinger's climate protection.

It became clear that increased efforts are still required at all levels in order to achieve the goal of climate neutrality by 2035, which the Freising Climate Alliance is striving for.

Eching is one of the 19 (of 24) municipalities that have joined the climate alliance in the district.

The objectives

While the first part of the event was dedicated to technical lectures, the afternoon went to the first exploratory talks in the individual working groups, who independently define their objectives and set initial focal points, which were then presented in a subsequent presentation in the plenum.

Herrmann was very pleased about the commitment of the almost 40 active people who want to get involved, bringing along a wide range of know-how and specialist knowledge as well as a "nice cross-section of age" in addition to their personal interest.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

“A super mix” as the climate protection manager emphasizes, because the members represent very different social and professional groups.

“Of course, the individual working groups, in which between five and ten participants have agreed to work, are open to other interested parties,” Herrmann recruits for additional supporters.

Cooperation, not least also from (more) younger Echingers, is possible and desired at any time.

The advisory board will meet every three to four months and discuss the task areas prioritized in the individual working groups and then submit the proposed implementation to the municipal council for a decision.

The next meeting

The next meeting is planned for December 9th and, as things stand, will have to take place online as a Zoom conference.
