The United States Navy has rescued two Iranian sailors who were at sea for eight days after their fishing vessel ran aground and was swept away in the Gulf of Oman, the Navy said last night (Sunday).
The Navy said the two were in good health and mental health and posted a picture of them waving from their vessels to signal they needed help.
"A U.S. Navy ship rescued two U.S. sailors (Saturday) from a fishing vessel, after being swept away for eight days in the Gulf of Oman," the U.S. Navy Central Command said.
It was also reported that a navy cargo ship rescued them about six hours after they called for help, and it provided them with food, water and medical care.
They were transferred to the Oman Coast Guard, near the capital Muscat, and the Indian Navy for assistance received from the Sultanate.
"This is what we were trained to do," said the commander of the Navy's Central Command, Vice Admiral Brad Cooper.
"As professional sailors, we have a responsibility to help those in distress at sea."
