The coalition agreement of the future traffic light coalition in the federal government is 177 pages long, the new state government in Berlin just needs a little less space: On around 150 pages, the SPD, the Greens and the Left have presented what they are planning to do with the city - and which party will take on which department.

In addition to the designated governing mayor Franziska Giffey, the SPD will provide four senators: for urban development and housing, interior affairs, economy and education.

The coalition partners wanted to do a job that shows that "Berlin can be a pioneer in many areas," said Giffey.

Three departments each for the Greens and the Left

As before, the Greens will have three departments.

However, the party is given responsibility for finances, previously in the hands of the SPD for more than 20 years.

In addition, the Greens continue to occupy the Senate Department for Environment, Transport and Climate.

There is also a health department supplemented by science.

The departments for culture and Europe as well as for labor and social affairs remain with the left.

The responsibility for the judiciary has been added.

The coalition agreement bears the title »Future Capital Berlin«, subtitle: »Social. Ecologically. Diverse. Economically strong «. The government's work should focus on rent and housing policy, domestic and educational policy. The administration should become more capable of acting through new positions and tighter procedures, said Giffey - many citizens should like to hear that. Green top candidate Bettina Jarasch said they wanted to make Berlin a "green, climate-neutral capital." The country wants to invest at least three billion euros annually in the new legislature.

The three governing parties also want to strengthen culture.

The industry suffered particularly from the restrictions of the corona pandemic.

According to the contract, "Berlin's unique cultural landscape" will be secured and strengthened during and after the pandemic.

Klaus Lederer has been (Left) Senator for Culture since 2016.

He was also his party's top candidate.

Personnel decisions only shortly before Christmas

The SPD, the Left and the Greens still have to approve the contract.

The party congresses for this are planned for December 5th for the Social Democrats and for December 12th for the Greens.

The membership decision of the Berlin Left is to run from December 3rd to 17th.

If the party has given its approval, Giffey wants to be elected as the new governing mayor in the House of Representatives on December 21.

Who exactly will belong to the red-green-red Senate should remain open for a while.

The SPD does not want to decide on this until December 21, and the left will discuss it on December 20.

"I think it's respectful that we don't talk about personnel until all three parties have approved the coalition agreement," said Giffey.

The SPD won the Berlin House of Representatives election on September 26th, clearly ahead of the Greens and the CDU, while the Left came fourth.
